How the MGP-4R places garlic cloves
The MGP-4R works through a ground-driven conveyor belt fitted with 50 × 50 mm planting pockets. Seated operators take garlic cloves from the side trays and manually load the pockets. As the belt moves, each pocket reaches the discharge section and releases the planting material into a partitioned hopper. Flexible pipes then guide the cloves into the four separate planting furrows.
This is a manual-feed machine, not an automatic clove-pickup planter. Consistent placement requires appropriately graded planting material and trained operators who can maintain a steady feeding rhythm. The design relies on mechanical transmission from the ground wheels, avoiding a separate electronic metering drive.
Changing a drive sprocket alters the nominal in-row spacing. Furrow opener positions and planting depth are adjustable within the specified limits. The actual field performance depends on the chosen spacing, travel speed and operators.
Four rows without automatic clove selection
The MGP-4R is suited to planting systems requiring four rows per tractor pass. Its equal row-spacing range is 150–320 mm. For example, at 250 mm spacing, four planting rows occupy 750 mm between the first and last opener centres. At the maximum 320 mm setting, they occupy the full 960 mm span.
The current standard configuration has four operator seats and a mass of 140 kg. Compared with the MGP-3R, the MGP-4R provides an additional planting line but requires careful planning of the labour needed for manual feeding.
Adjustable row spacing – centre to centre
Move the furrow openers along the frame to suit your planting layout. The maximum distance between the two outermost row centres is 960 mm. The values below assume equal spacing between all adjacent rows; uneven configurations are also possible within the available span.
Machine dimensions and standard configuration
All four MGP manual belt planters share the same confirmed external dimensions: 2000 mm long, 1550 mm wide and 950 mm high. These are overall machine measurements used for access, storage and transport planning, not the spacing between planting rows. The maximum centre-to-centre span from the first to the last furrow opener is 960 mm. Each adjacent row must be at least 150 mm from its neighbour.
The planter can be arranged with equally spaced rows as shown in the calculator, or with other opener positions within the mechanical limits. Always confirm tractor track and field-bed suitability before ordering.
Planting pockets and drive sprockets
Each pocket on the manually filled conveyor belt has nominal dimensions of 50 × 50 mm. Operators place individual cloves in the moving pockets. Material should be graded and must fit without becoming trapped. These are belt pockets, not the Ø23 / Ø28 / Ø36 mm metal cups used on the automatic AGP chain machines.
The current in-row planting distance range is 85–190 mm. Spacing is set by selecting mechanical drive sprockets, not by continuously sliding a control. Two additional sprockets may be chosen to match the grower’s required spacing. Ask MacWood to confirm the supplied sprocket combinations before purchasing.
Indicative field capacity
Indicative planting capacity is approximately 0.7 hectares per day. This is not a guaranteed output: the actual area planted depends on row spacing, soil preparation, the length of the working day, travel speed, operator feeding ability and the planting material.

What crops can the four-row MGP plant?
Garlic cloves and onion sets are primary applications. Other compatible bulbs, including selected gladiolus bulbs and saffron corms, may be feasible after checking the material dimensions and the delivery path. For broad beans or non-standard material, ask MacWood for a compatibility assessment.
Choosing the right planter
Select an equal centre-to-centre spacing between 150 and 320 mm. Four rows at 200 mm occupy 600 mm between outermost opener centres. The visual diagram updates as you move the slider, but it is an illustrative schematic, not a measured CAD view.

Frequently asked questions
Does the MGP-4R have four operator seats?
Yes, the current standard MGP-4R configuration has four seats.
What spacing is available between adjacent rows?
For equal spacing, 150–320 mm measured from furrow opener centre to centre.
Do operators place cloves by hand?
Yes. Operators load individual cloves into the pockets of the moving mechanical planting belt.
What size are the belt pockets?
The specified planting pockets are 50 × 50 mm. Check the size and shape of your material to ensure it is compatible.
Can the machine plant 25 cm row centres?
Yes, 250 mm equal spacing lies within the MGP-4R range and occupies 750 mm between outermost rows.
How is the 85–190 mm in-row distance set?
It is configured mechanically using drive sprockets. Two additional sprockets may be selected to suit the desired distances.
Is the depth adjustable?
Yes, up to 160 mm according to the current GARMACH specification.
